you taught me how to walk a straight line
you taught me how to make it all mine
you were the bridge into the afterlife
you taught me how to walk a straight line

speaking words I could not speak
you were laying next to me
don't cry, they said, keep it light
how do we keep you from leaving?

I remember sitting in his hospital room, so scared to admit that I was angry with god. I was in the midst of divorce and so hurt by all of it and confused about what it meant for my life. My sweet uncle lay there, listening with such compassion. He welcomed my doubt without shame or judgement. I truly didn't know that was possible: to be messy and honest and wide open. It changed me forever. He changed me forever.
